The Damascus and Countryside Chamber of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Directorate of Culture in Damascus, launched its first joint scientific seminar at the Arab Cultural Center in Al-Adawi. Titled "Shami Cattle and Goats: Unexploited Treasures," the event aimed to highlight promising investment opportunities within the Syrian livestock sector.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Youssef Kanaan, Head of the Damascus and Countryside Branch of the Syrian Veterinary Medical Association. He reviewed the exceptional advantages of these indigenous local breeds, emphasizing their high resilience to environmental changes, adaptability to the Syrian climate, and outstanding productivity in terms of meat, milk, and high fertility rates.
During the presentation, Dr. Kanaan stressed that these breeds represent a "national genetic treasure" that requires well-studied government and community plans for preservation and development. He pointed out the existence of massive, untapped investment opportunities in breeding and genetic improvement, which would enhance food security and raise the income levels of local breeders.
The seminar witnessed a broad attendance of technical cadres from the Chamber of Agriculture, members of the Veterinary Medical Association, and a selection of breeders and investors in livestock production. The floor was opened for active discussions regarding practical support mechanisms to develop this wealth and overcome the obstacles facing it.
It is worth noting that this event serves as the first step in a series of joint activities through which the Damascus and Countryside Chamber of Agriculture, alongside scientific and cultural entities, aims to support the agricultural economy and highlight livestock resources as a fundamental pillar in the reconstruction phase
