The Chairman of the Damascus and Damascus Countryside Chamber of Agriculture, Mr. Mohammad Jannan, accompanied by Mr. Hassan Haliwa, Chairman of the Nurseries Committee in Syria, Mr. Kenan Nadr, the Chamber’s advisor in the Netherlands, and Mr. Nizar Saad El-Din, board member of the Chamber, conducted an inspection tour today, Sunday, June 8, 2026, to a model greenhouse nursery in Damascus.
The delegation reviewed the latest production techniques and methods implemented in the nursery, focusing on four main pillars:
-
Smart Shading: Utilizing white shading nets to soften sunlight and provide ideal lighting for sensitive plants, while maintaining proper ventilation and humidity levels.
-
Vertical Farming: Utilizing hanging spaces to cultivate ferns and climbing plants, thereby multiplying the production capacity per square meter.
-
Fibrous Supports: Growing Schefflera and climbing plants using coconut coir poles to mimic their natural habitat, ensuring a high-quality product highly demanded for home and office decor.
-
Production Diversification and Variety Importation: Combining indoor ornamental plants like Schefflera with succulents and cacti such as the "Bunny Ear" cactus, alongside introducing high-quality, disease-resistant plant varieties imported from the Netherlands to enrich the local market and boost the competitiveness of Syrian products.
Mr. Mohammad Jannan praised the advanced level of organization and development within the nursery, as well as the efforts to introduce imported varieties. He emphasized that such models represent the ideal path to enhancing production efficiency, reducing waste, and providing healthy, disease-free seedlings for both citizens and investors.
For his part, Mr. Hassan Haliwa explained that the Chamber's Nurseries Committee is working to scale these successful practices across all licensed nurseries, offering the necessary technical support to control quality, encourage home gardening, and increase green spaces within cities.
In the same context, Mr. Kenan Nadr pointed out that keeping pace with international standards and importing premium Dutch varieties will open new horizons for exchanging expertise, paving the way for exporting Syrian ornamental plants to global markets in the future.
Concluding the tour, the Damascus and Damascus Countryside Chamber of Agriculture invited all growers and stakeholders to benefit from these pioneering experiences, reaffirming its ongoing commitment to organizing seminars and field visits to bring greenery back to Syria
